Tet Nguyen Dan Festival, the Vietnamese new year, is one of the most celebrated festivals in Vietnam. It is also referred to as Tet or Lunar New year and means the first morning of the first day of the new year
There are many festivals around the year, but Tet holds a special place and is celebrated throughout the country with utmost joy and enthusiasm. The date changes every year depending on the internationally recognized Lunar calendar.
All schools and offices are officially closed during this time, and people like to spend this time with their family and friends. Tet arrives on the first day of the spring season and is the busiest and most vibrant time of the year.
Traditional Vietnamese food prepared during this festival includes Banh Chung (sticky rice with meat or beans), canh mang (bamboo soup), dua Hanh (onion and cabbage), cu Kieu (pickled leeks), and mut (dried fruits). Vietnamese prefer to eat vegetarian food during the Tet Nguyen Dan festival.
It is the best time of the year in Vietnam. As part of their traditional custom, all children and Elders get “lucky money” in red envelopes.
The Tet Nguyen Dan festival is celebrated for 3 days.
Day 1: The day is celebrated with family members only. People visit their grandparents and other elderly members of the family to seek blessings and good wishes. It is considered an auspicious day that brings good luck to the family. Guests do not visit other people’s houses on this day.
Day 2: This day is celebrated with friends.
Day 3: The last of the festival, people visit temples. They prey on their ancestors by offering five kinds of fruits, Ngu Qua, at the altar.
Many visit their teachers and gurus who taught and guided them to follow the right path and actions in life. The teaching profession and teachers are highly respected in Vietnam for bringing good fortune.
You should visit Vietnam at least once around this time of the year to witness the vibrancy and unique experience.
