Essential Tips for First-Timers in Ladakh – Divas Sojourn

Leh Ladakh with Divas
  • Ladakh is a dream destination that is on everyone’s bucket list. Majestic Himalayas, breathtaking landscapes, mountain peaks, snow, plateaus, rivers, and high-altitude glaciers are some of the reasons you should visit this region at least once in your lifetime. Road trips best explore the beauty of this place.
  • Ladakh is a high-altitude mountain range. And the weather is cold and harsh, which makes it challenging for many people. The resources are also limited with respect to water, food, and electricity. Therefore, they have to be used wisely.
  • There are a few things that you should consider, especially if you are visiting this paradise for the first time.
  • ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR PLANNING YOUR TRIP TO LADAKH
  • Cold and Challenging Climate
  • The climate in Ladakh is cold and windy throughout the year. It goes below freezing point in many places, especially in winter, i.e., from November to March.
  • Although the summers, i.e., from May-Aug, are pleasant and warmer but carry light sweaters/jackets during the daytime. While the night remains cold and you must carry woolens.
  • The mountain passes like Khardung La pass, Chang La, Zoji La pass, etc., are very cold even during day time.
  • Acclimatization is Important
  • Many visitors take the process of acclimatization very lightly, and then they face health issues. It is essential to acclimatize your body to a higher altitude.
  • Spend a few days at a lower altitude so your body adapts to the altitude first.  Keep your physical activity minimum and walk slowly for the first 2 days, especially if you have traveled by plane (and not taken the road route).
  • If your body is not acclimatized correctly, it can cause problems like shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, severe headache, etc.
  • Carry Medicine for Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)
  • Consult your doctor before planning your trip to Ladakh, especially if you are on any specific medication.
  • Also, check for AMS medicine, as the altitude in Ladakh ranges from 10,000-23,000 feet above sea level. With height, oxygen levels decrease, and AMS can cause vomiting, headache, and shortness of breath. And in severe cases, it may lead to death.
  • Carry the prescribed AMS medicine, thermometer, and first aid kit in an emergency.
  • Carry Comfortable and Warm Clothes
  • The weather in Ladakh is always cold in all seasons. Therefore, you must carry comfortable winter clothing in summer as well. Though the daytime in the summer is sunny, the night gets pretty cold.
  • Always wear your clothes in layers to remove them if you feel hot, or wear an additional layer if it is cold.
  • And most importantly, if you want to enjoy Ladakh, wear clothes and shoes that are comfortable and warm and will protect you from harsh weather. And not for clicking pictures.
  • Book Your Accommodation in Advance
  • Many hotels and homestays are available in Ladakh, but with the increase in tourists every year, it gets filled quickly. And finding a place to stay is challenging, especially during peak seasons.
  • Therefore, you should book your stay well in advance.
